Public office and political engagement as a whole has historically remained far below potential. As representation and diversity become increasingly important issues in public office, ACEL seeks to bring you approachable answers to an often intimidating question: What does it take to run for public office?

On July 8, the Dynamics of Leadership conference will introduce attendees to Senator Kimberly Yee and Assemblyman Robert Bonta, two highly experienced government leaders, in a bi-partisan panel that will jump start your journey to serving in the public. The talk -- titled "Running for Public Office 101: Your Hands-On Guide to Public Office" -- will give you the tools to fund your campaign, solidify your platform as each speaker discusses their personal experiences in public servitude.

Bonta is a member of the California State Assembly, as well as the first and only Filipino American legislator in California history. The current Assistant Majority Leader in California, he will offer the steps he took to dedicate his lifetime to advocating for minorities and economic development. Bonta proudly serves to support public safety, Asian Americans and more, showing that growing up in a trailer does not prevent you from reaching adequate resources to make a difference.

Yee is the Arizona State Senate Majoriy Leader and the first Asian American woman elected to ever serve in the state's legislature. As the second woman to serve in her leadership position within the Senate since U.S. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, she brings her experiences as a highly influential woman in politics and a trailblazer for many. Yee has led committees for ethics, education, health and more while continuing to own a local business with her husband, showing how public office can offer rewarding leadership opportunities, rather than remain a sacrifice.

The panel will be moderated by Sharon Ng, a successful attorney at Stinson Leonard Street LLP. Recognized as ACEL's Corporate Leader of the Year in 2015, she is an experienced member of the public sector who has served as a Superior Court judge, a Court Appointed Special Advocate and the chair of the State Bar of Arizona Committee on Minorities and Women in the Law. One of Ng's main areas of expertise is in the area of tribal law, displaying her respect for and knowledge of minority representation in government.

Early bird discounts are currently available for you to see this all-star panel present on an inspirational topic that will truly change the way you view your potential to make a community impact

A Global Strategist with a passion for Asian American advocacy, George Mui is a federal government leader whose award-winning impact transcends national borders.

Mui currently serves as a senior business development specialist for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency. Focusing on the Asian market, he leverages his extensive global experience to develop business and represent the MBDA on the President’s National Export Initiative (NEI) Small Business Working Group.

The Dynamics of Leadership conference will proudly feature two powerful and engaging seminars by George Mui:

1. On July 8, the international leader will discuss the role of employee resource groups in promoting diversity in the corporate structure in a talk titled “ERG Panel: The Role of Employee Resource Group and Your Career Representation / Advancement / Advocacy.”

2. On July 9, Mui will return as a breakfast keynote speaker to engage Dynamics of Leadership attendees in a talk about utilizing government resources for business development and expansion. Mui said this talk is especially important in the Asian Pacific American community, which tends to be refrain from utilizing these incredible, readily available services due to distrust, pride, fear of language barriers and more.

Since joining the MBDA in 2008, Mui has successfully created resources for minority business owners through his “Access to the Global Economy” program and as a Senior Advisor for the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. His innovative work led him to be granted the 2010 MBDA National Director Award, as well as the 2011 Impact Award from the Chicago Minority Supplier Development Council.

While his work with the federal government keeps him busy, Mui still prioritizes his service toward community development. In 2013, he created the Asian American Executive Network, which has advocated for over hundreds of AAPI professionals and entrepreneurs since its inception. He also served on the OCA National Board and the Chicago Mayor’s Advisory Commission for the Office of New Americans for numerous years.

Prior to the MBDA, Mui steadily expanded his presence as a leader in both small and international businesses. During his 19 successful years at Lucent Technology, he grew his business unit by nearly $300 million in three years. He also has started an international business consulting firmed prior to joining government service.

Mui holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in computer sciences from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he currently serves on the IIT Alumni Board, and completed two executive education programs at Stanford University. He was recently recognized with multiple awards for his community services: Asian American Coalition of Chicago Chinese American Service Award and the Illinois Cook County State Attorney Community Service Award in 2016. In 2011, he was also inducted to the Asian American Hall of Fame in Chicago.

Vanguard leader David Foegal to unify generations at ACEL leadership conference

Sitting between the cusp of the Generation X and Millennial generations, David Foegal is often the youngest person in a room of high-ranking positions.

Foegal is in a unique position. As a senior investment consultant at Vanguard, one of the largest investment companies in the world, Foegal manages and interacts with people one generation older and one generation younger than him daily. As expected, some professionals question his expertise. But Foegal's strong ability to leverage these differences has helped him persevere and succeed past skepticism.

"Multiple heads and multiple perspectives better one's understanding of the current situation," Foegal said. "Just looking at something from multiple angles, you'll be able to minimize whatever prejudice people have."

At the Dynamics of Leadership conference on July 8, Foegal will speak about "Working on Multi-Generational Teams: Effective Techniques to Minimize Generational Differences." Through his workshop, he will inspire attendees to empathize with the diversity of their peers' professional behavior, from Millennials desiring fast-paced information and action to Baby Boomers wanting their voices to be heard.

Rather than judging professionals by at first glance, Foegal said the heart of a profession should be listening to clients and their goals — a mindset he hopes will rise when his children enter the work force in the future.

"As the parent of young children, you never know, as your children age, what types of prejudices they may come across because they are younger," Foegal said.

He notes that supporting these emerging leaders, as well as rising minority professionals, is important in widening access to resources in systems that aren't necessarily designed for their demographics to lead. For Foegal, stepping up was the result of one question: If you don't, then who will?

"If you don't invest in how to navigate some of that, you can never expect Asian Americans to be the ones who lead if they don't know how to lead within the system that exists," Foegal said.

Foegal is currently the Arizona sponsor of Vanguard's Leadership and Engagement for Asian Professionals (LEAP) program. He plans to get involved in his children’s school board in the future.
