2016 Member of the Year Michael Chang commits to developing AAPI leadership following positive experiences with ACEL

  • PDF

When Michael Chang joined ACEL in January, he was primarily searching for professional development guidance and connections in the Phoenix AAPI community. However, Chang’s involvement quickly grew, rapidly bringing a positive impact to the ACEL community. For his strong commitment to the organization and to building Asian American leadership, Chang will be honored as the 2016 Member of the Year at the 2017 ACELebration of Leadership Gala.

“It’s a great honor,” Chang said. “It really means to me that putting in the effort is going to have an impact on the people around you.”

Chang said that his most profound experience as a member occurred in the summer, during the ACEL Dynamics of Leadership Conference, where Asian American professionals spoke about their experiences in a way that AAPI leaders could fully relate to.

“We’re one of the smallest populations in the U.S. and even more so in Phoenix,” Chang said. “Having other people in your field provide mentorship is one thing. Having other people who identify with other core aspects of your identity, that’s very crucial to yourself as a professional to see the potential that you have.”

In the future, Chang said he will help encourage the growth of ACEL by strengthening its organizational infrastructure. He also hopes to widen opportunities for Asian Americans, as he said ACEL and founder Jason Wong did for him.

“ACEL has a good mix of both professional and social experiences,” Chang said. “You can get involved in whatever way you like. I definitely want to help open more of those opportunities for other people, whether or not they are already members.”
